Matte lip looks are some of my favorites, but they can often be hard to create. There are so many factors to consider when creating the perfect matte lip - are your lips hydrated enough without being too glossy? Are they covered in dry patches? Do you have the right products to make your lipstick last all day? These are all things to consider when you want to wear a matte lip. Here are the steps that have worked for me when creating this kind of look.
#1 Regularly exfoliating your lips is super important, especially if you wear matte lipsticks often. There is nothing more unforgiving to dry lips than matte lipstick - it will highlight every little dry patch and cracked line, making your lips look less than stellar. Exfoliating your lips can be as easy as applying some lip balm, patting a bit of sugar on your lips, and then gently scrubbing to remove any dead skin.
#2 After exfoliating, I like to add a little bit of a lip balm. Matte lip products have a tendency to be a bit drying, so some added hydration never hurts. The key is to not slather your lips in balm - too much, and any further products you try to apply won't be able to stick to your lips and they'll end up wearing off too quickly. What I do is barely tap on some balm, just enough for my lips to feel healthy. The Dior Creme de Rose lip balm is one of my ultimate favorites - I've been using this for the past year and can definitely see what all of the hype has been about. This is an incredibly hydrating balm, and it has a way of making your lips feel pillowy soft and plump.
#3 This next step is the one I consider to be a huge game changer for how well your matte lip will look, as well as how long it will last. Taking a lipliner that matches your lipstick, carefully line your lips and then fill them in. This gives something for your matte lipstick to adhere to, so it will stay in place hours longer than normal. I have a few lip liners that I swear by - for drugstore options, both NYX and Rimmel have great offerings. Rimmel's Eastend Snob is supposed to be a near-perfect dupe for Charlotte Tilbury's Pillowtalk, and it's one of my favorites for a matte nude/pink lip. I've recently rediscovered my love for MAC lip liners, and am currently obsessed with Soar for a neutral pink lip look. It's incredibly smooth and creamy for a lip liner and lasts ages.
